The City of Lee’s Summit will abide by the directives issued by Jackson County during this public health emergency. The Jackson County Health Department is the authority having jurisdiction with regard to public health, including the City of Lee’s Summit. Jackson County further amended its executive order March 16 with the following requirements:
· Prohibit large public gatherings of more than 10 people effective immediately. Exceptions include governmental and judicial functions, healthcare facilities, private business operations, religious and faith-based activities, weddings and funerals.
· Close restaurants, bars, taverns, clubs and movie theatres effective March 17, 2020 for 15 days. Exceptions are delivery, pickup and drive-through service.
· Close schools, with the support of superintendents from all 14 school districts until Friday, April 3.
“The City of Lee’s Summit will adhere to the requirements set forth by Jackson County,” said Mayor Bill Baird. “We understand that taking these measures can be challenging and can have tremendous impact throughout the community. If we take these steps now, we can reduce the number of people affected by the virus.”
According to the CDC, the most effective ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to practice preventative hygiene and follow social distancing recommendations. Experts have said that this virus can spread within six feet if someone coughs. Elderly people and those with underlying medical conditions are at the highest risk.
The City is following CDC guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19 and working closely with health officials at the Jackson County Health Department as they continue to provide expert guidance and public information. Our highest priority is to protect and prepare our residents for any potential risk to public health as the situation continues to evolve. As of now, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Jackson County.
