July 26, 2019

As noted in our previous communications, the Board of Education of the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and Dr. Dennis Carpenter entered into an agreement under which Dr. Carpenter resigned as the District’s Superintendent of Schools this week. The agreement has been signed by Dr. Carpenter and Board president Julie Doane, and it is available to the public via this link. The agreement includes provisions under which the parties agree not to discuss the negotiations leading up to the agreement.  The Board of Education approved the severance agreement at the July 25th meeting on a 5-2 vote. Board members Clark and Murdock voted no; board members Doane, Smith, Fritchie, Allen and Hedrick voted to approve.

Other items for clarity:

  • The payment of $750,000 is reduced by Dr. Carpenter’s July salary, which he received in the ordinary course of payment.
  • The portion of the payment funded by the District’s insurance carrier is $75,000.

It is important to release this document to the public so that there is common understanding of the terms and details. Thank you for understanding the provisions under which we cannot discuss the negotiations or agreement further.
