The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has endorsed and offered their support for both the LSR7 224 Million No-Tax Increase Bond initiative and the City of Lee’s Summit’s Use Tax ballot initiative. Both of which will appear on the April 7, 2020 ballot. We believe the no tax increase bond will provide the necessary upgrades needed to keep Lee’s Summit as one of the premier school districts in the region and state. With lost revenue to everyday city services, we believe the use tax will replenish those lost dollars and ensure the Lee’s Summit community is properly prepared to address all public concerns, from public safety to neighborhood park renovations.

The LSR7 no tax increase bond initiative will go toward improving a wide range of needs facing the school district. This includes a new look for the outdated “original” Lee’s Summit High School, a new middle school to address capacity issues and upgrades to security. A new sports complex for Lee’s Summit High School and upgrades to the existing middle and elementary schools will also be addressed. https://www3.lsr7.org/comprehensive-facilities-master-plan-no-tax-rate-increase-april-2020-bond/

The use tax – a tax imposed on the use, storage or consumption of tangible personal property in Missouri for purchases made outside of the state, will keep Lee’s Summit future-ready. A local use tax would be applied in lieu of local sales tax and a buyer will never pay both sales tax and use tax. Revenue from the use tax will go to fund the same services the city provides from the existing sales tax such as streets, public safety, storm water improvements and neighborhood park renovations and maintenance.

“Both ballot initiatives are extremely vital to the growth, development and future of Lee’s Summit,” said Matt Baird, President of the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce. “The LSR7 school district is a key component to the success of the Lee’s Summit community. Making these necessary enhancements will only make the district that much stronger and prepared for the future. Online purchases are becoming the norm and, in order to keep our status as one of the best places to live, we must maintain a level of revenue vital to our success. These ballot initiatives will do all of this and more!”

The Lee’s Summit Chamber supports the LSR7 No Tax Increase Bond issue and the City of Lee’s Summit’s Use Tax ballot initiative. We encourage the citizens of Lee’s Summit and our business community to show their support by voting yes on April 7!
